I had written a huge speach that would have put Will Shakey to shame, but unfortunately the bottle or two of rather smooth merlot, and my total technical incompetence, have rendered it to the everlasting depth of cyber space. I just want to say that without your unfailing encouragement and unflinching support, life would have been a duller place. In the dim and distant past I flogged myself round the boards of Manchester, reaching the semi finals of the Masters against Murayama in my first sprint competition. You came up to me before the ride and said to me had I thought about how I was going to ride the race. Honestly I had not. I was just going to make it up as I went along. That was probably the turning point in my life as a cyclist.

Since then I've picked up a few masters titles and a stripy t-shirt, mainly because you made me believe I could.

I hope that your time in Scotland brings you the rest and happiness that you deserve, and your island tranquility gives you back what you have given to others.

There will always be a welcome in North Wales for you and Eve, should you wish to try out the bright City lights of St Asaph. As my legs grow tired, your desire burns strong in the legs of my kids; 5 Welsh titles and 1 British so far. Schlappers to the core.
