Bored Ducks

Andrea sent me the link to post to the Schlapp blog. What was she thinking? Must be all the fresh air.

Anyway, I thought you might like to know what we were playing at in Bordeaux.

The Schlappers were represented by Ellen Hunter piloting Aileen '100% MBE' McGlynn and myself. Also in attendance was Jon 'Coaxing, not coaching' Norfolk, who was there to absorb the atmosphere and learn a bit more about this para-cycling thing. He has been a bit quiet ever since.

This is the second year that the champs have been affiliated to the UCI, so there were stripey jerseys up for grabs. Ellen and Aileen were there to defend their Kilo title from last year and were going to have a go at the pursuit (Para-cycling has an unusual points qualifying system for Beijing next year so the more events we do well in, the bigger the team.)

The kilo is their forte and after a false start (there were a few all round - the UCI are going to adopt start gates for the tandems from now on) they got the hammer down and a gold medal was the result. I think they were after a faster time but, considering having to do two starts, nobody is going to mind too much.

One rest day later they got up for the pursuit. Imagine the bemused smiles all round - a 16 second PB and fastest qualifier! Not bad at all considering they did not specifically train for it. Maybe it was the caffeine, or perhaps they have not been trying hard enough before? Or maybe it adds weight to the argument that track tandeming is more about strength than speed?

Anyway, once they had realised that they had at least a silver medal it was smiles all round. Then they went off for lunch (Ellen had more caffeine - always good for a laugh) and returned in serious mood, and it was clear that they were going for gold. Although their Aussie competition was not at it's best, Ellen and Aileen were still the underdogs, but they got an early lead and the Australian duo only managed to close the gap a little bit.

So, an unexpected gold for the girls and a tantalising glimpse of what they are capable of.

At this point it is only fair that I mention Jon Norfolk, who did a great job of coaxing Aileen in the run up to their rides. Cool, calm, collected and good with any coffee machine.

I was there with Barney Storey defending our kilo and sprint titles from 2006. We did, which was nice.

And Bordeaux? Full of French and you can't get a large cup of coffee for love nor money. The city centre is (the Aussies told me) very nice and the surrounding countryside is full of vineyards.

So there you have it. Another two minutes of your life you won't get back!

Another gold for Ellen & Anthony

Schlapper Ellen Hunter and AIleen McGlynn rode themselves into the history books and the ground and took another Gold medal at the World Paralympic Champs in France today. This time they won the tandem pursuit - their first foray into this event. Ellen led from start to finish with Aileen coming a close second [on the back of the tandem] :-)
So, Ellen and Aileen are DOUBLE double world champ at the moment. You get what I mean.
Another double world champ in the club is Anthony Kappes - taking yet another gold with Barny Story this time in the sprint. Brilliant riding by all.

Little Dan Beats Big Craig!

Just seen this on the BC Site! Young Schlapper Dan has just beaten Big Craig MacLean

...In a limbo comp! Well Done Dan!

World titles and records for Anthony and Ellen

At the UCI World Paralympic champs, Anthony Kappes, stoking Barny Story on the tandem took another world title and a world record in the kilo. Ellen Hunter also retained her world title piloting Aileen Mcglynn to another world record.
Today Aileen and Ellen are preparing for the pursuit, an event they have not trained for and hate to boot!

CHEAP SPORTS MASSAGE

Hi all,

Just to let you know that at the 3 club sessions on the dates posted by Graham i have arranged for there to be a qualified masseur on hand to give some discounted massage treatments, she's really good and can handle those big legged sprinter types (being my wife she has to!!!).... anyone interested should email Melissa on the following address to book a time slot:

m.a.gill@btinternet.com

the sessions will last around 30 minutes and cost £7

great for aiding recovery and preventing injury!

Track Sessions booked

I have booked 3 track sessions. Dates and times are:

Sunday 19 August 2 till 5pm
Sunday 9 September 2 till 5pm
Sunday 23 September 2 till 5 pm

That's about a thousand quids' worth, so please use it.

Those preparing for the Nationals can use it for quality speed work. We will be able to cater for pursuit efforts, kilo efforts, starts, team sprint, flying efforts and lactate tolerance

Others can use it for pre-track league speed work, bunch riding/racing skills,
flying efforts, getting used to the track etc etc.

And some of us can use it for a social gathering, chin wagging efforts and gossip tolerance.

Yoof Noos - The Nat Youth Omnium Series

Our young riders did us proud, flying the Vital colours at Newport, Herne Hill and Manchester in the finals of the Youth Omnium Series. Dan Whelan was 14th in the Under 14 boys, Jess Anderson was 4th in the U14 girls - definately punching above her weight against riders from Palmer Park in Reading, and Jo Wilman won the Under16 girls.

There was some great racing in all three rounds of the final - the tactical awareness, skill and speed of the youth of today (no wonder adults are always complaining about them).

Jo and Chris (and Ski and Paul)

The photo

Just So You Know...

I AM here. And, now that I've sussed it, I can blog. Have a chest infection and can't ride so am not seeing many poeple. Hopefully the Doc will rattle his bones and mutter the healing words over my prone form tomorrow so I can ride without coughing for the first time in 4 weeks.

We have 2 (possibly 3) new club members. Jo (the little one not the big one) may also have lined up another 15 yr old youth sprinter from North of the border to join. Give him till the end of the week. Also, Scott - a 15 yr old who has rarely ridden- showed real potential for sprinting at a schools tournament, and Simon - another 15 yr old, this time from Eastlands who is keen to sprint.

I'm not sure what it is with her (Jo) and young lads - why isn't she bringing more vets to swell our membership?

Any suggestions for Jo's think bubble in this pic. Perhaps "If I fall sideways and land on Ski, do I get to keep him all for myself?"
